When taking a car to a machine or hand car wash the goal of the business is to clean as many cars as possible in the fastest amount of time. In general tools and materials are rarely cleaned between different vehicles and can contaminate and damage your paintwork.
The steps of a detail largely depend on the service that is being completed on the vehicle.
In general, a detail will have the following steps:
- Exterior decontamination, wash, dry & seal
- Interior decontamination clean & seal
- Optionally, after decontamination cleans different surfaces can be polished to be brought back from damage or age.
Every detail is different, but most will follow the above steps with some additional features.
Depending on where you are in the country, what service you require and the company completing the detail, pricing can vary.

There are many arguments for both options, DIY detailing can be a very cost-effective way of cleaning and preserving your cars value and condition.
Having your car professionally cleaned and detailed will have the same effect but with less risk of causing damage to your car.
If you do decide to go the DIY route, it’s important to do research on how to safely clean and maintain your car.

A regular car wash aims to wash your car as quickly as possible, using the least amount of product and time.
Detailing is aimed at restoring a car back to as close to showroom condition as possible no matter how long it takes.
It’s like someone cleaning your house in 20 minutes vs 8 hours. More care is taken, the cleaning is deeper and more effective and aims to reduce the number of hours spent cleaning in future.
Of course this comes with a higher price, however this is offset against the car being worth more when you come to sell it due to better condition.
